CompanyStack vs Tally: wrong question, useful answer
Tally is India's system of record, and it is not going anywhere. The real comparison is between Tally plus the humans around it, and what those humans should be doing instead.
- comparison
- tally
- tallyprime
- accounting-software
- bookkeeping
Start with the conclusion: we are not trying to replace Tally, and if someone pitches you an accounting service that begins with “first, migrate off Tally”, ask them who bears the risk of that migration. TallyPrime runs the books of most serious small businesses in India, your auditor knows it, your CA’s entire practice is built on it, and its edit log is what satisfies the MCA’s audit trail requirement under Rule 11(g). Tally earned its position.
But “CompanyStack vs Tally” is what founders type into search, so let us answer the question underneath it, which is: I have Tally, why do my books still hurt?
Tally is a system of record, not a system of work
TallyPrime Silver costs Rs 22,500 plus GST one-time (Gold, for multi-user, Rs 67,500), with an annual TSS subscription of Rs 4,500 for updates and connected services. As a ledger, that is excellent value. But look at what surrounds a working Tally installation in a typical SMB:
Someone types vouchers in, usually days or weeks after the fact. Someone downloads bank statements and keys them against the ledger. Someone extracts data for the CA at filing time. Someone reconciles GSTR-2B in a spreadsheet next to Tally, because the reconciliation is a judgement process, not a report. Someone chases the missing purchase invoices that block input credit. An entire cottage industry of add-ons, data-entry tools, GST suites and mobile companions exists precisely because Tally records the result of accounting work but does not do the work.
That surrounding labour is the actual cost of “running on Tally”, and it is invisible on any price list.
What CompanyStack does with a Tally business
We take over the work and leave the record where it is. Bank feeds and documents come to us, the engine codes transactions and drafts returns with a logged reason for every decision, a chartered accountant reviews and signs, and your books stay consistent, current and audit-ready, with Tally remaining the system of record your auditor and your history live in.
| Tally alone | CompanyStack | |
|---|---|---|
| Ledger and vouchers | Yes, gold standard | Maintained for you |
| Who enters the data | Your staff | Nobody on your payroll |
| GST returns | Data lives here; filing happens elsewhere | Prepared, reconciled, filed |
| GSTR-2B reconciliation | Manual, usually in Excel | Continuous, exceptions surfaced |
| Compliance calendar | Not in scope | Tracked, with penalty clocks |
| Cost shape | Licence + staff + CA retainer | One fixed monthly fee per entity |
If you are a Tally power user, we built something else for you
Some businesses, and every CA firm, want the opposite of outsourcing: they want to keep driving Tally themselves, faster. That is a different product, and we built it: the CompanyStack Tally Companion, a desktop app that puts an AI agent next to your own TallyPrime, on your machine, with every action gated behind your approval. It reads your ledgers conversationally, turns bank statement PDFs into posted vouchers, and files documents against the obligations they discharge. Power users deserve more than a chat wrapper.
The question that decides it
Tally answers “where do my books live”. It has the best answer in India. It does not answer “who does the work, how fast are errors caught, and what does the whole function cost per month”. Add the operator’s salary, the data-entry lag, the CA retainer and the spreadsheet reconciliations to the licence price, and compare that total against a service that owns the outcome and keeps Tally exactly where it is. Rip-and-replace is a cost we refuse to charge you, because the honest version of this comparison never required it.
